10 Resume Mistakes That Cost You Interviews

By cvee Team

Most resume mistakes are invisible to the person making them. Here are ten that recruiters see constantly — and how to fix each one.

1. Typos and grammar errors. Nothing kills credibility faster. Proofread three times, use spell-check, and have someone else review it. Even one error can land your resume in the reject pile.

2. Using a generic objective statement. "Seeking a challenging opportunity" tells the recruiter nothing. Replace it with a targeted professional summary that highlights specific value you bring.

3. Listing duties instead of achievements. "Responsible for managing accounts" is a job description, not a resume bullet. Rewrite it as: "Managed portfolio of 45 accounts totaling $3.2M in annual revenue, achieving 98% retention rate."

4. Including irrelevant information. Your hiring manager doesn't need to know your hobbies unless they're directly relevant. Every line should support your candidacy for this specific role.

5. Poor formatting. Inconsistent fonts, cramped spacing, or walls of text make your resume hard to read. Use consistent formatting throughout and leave adequate white space.

6. Making it too long. If you have under 10 years of experience, stick to one page. Even senior professionals rarely need more than two. Edit ruthlessly.

7. Using an unprofessional email address. Create a simple [email protected] if you haven't already. Recruiters notice.

8. Neglecting keywords. If the job posting mentions specific skills or tools, include them in your resume. ATS software filters on keyword matches.

9. Including references on the resume. "References available upon request" wastes space. Employers will ask for references when they need them.

10. Not tailoring each application. Sending the same resume to every job is the single biggest mistake. Spend ten minutes customizing your skills and summary for each posting. The improvement in response rate is dramatic.
